Chronicles Redux #1

it seems

like an eternity

that i left berlin

corona in the city

to the seclusion

illusion

of country life

where corona

is forgotten

more's the pity

masks disappeared

overnight

as for instance

did social distance

everything's hunky-dory

alright

in czech

that's the story

corona is at most

regional

how banal

everywhere but here

no fear

miners in the east

the poles brought

it in

and prague is prague

always was

always will

be

it's the foreigners

you see

a capital

is always

international

beware of aerosol

in the metropole

let's live life

again

isolation

was a pain

our nation

made the sacrifice

once was enough

there'll be

no twice

we can stave

off

a second wave

no time for sorrow

forget america

and brazil

(bolsonara's ill)

let the others pay

i say

here today

gone tomorrow

holidays are here

off to the south

sun beach and beer

that's what it's about

the risk of infection

is met with rejection

and if we bring it back

that's a bummer

but we really lived

our last summer.

Chronicles Redux #2

the jungle is retreating

beating back the tangle

- garden tools

go jingle-jangle -

of thorns and weeds

but there's still place

for the needs

of butterflies

toads and newts

twice-nesting birds

even the salamander

lurking behind the

coriander

and - no surprise

over our ponds

full of their larvae

dragonflies

it's not the same

routine

as in previous years

the fears

of the virus

are still with us

and the second wave

is within reach

and I don't want to be

on the beach

in the path

of the blitz

when the tsunami hits

so it's still

social distancing

no one visiting

even the grandchildren

eleven and ten

who made their stay

in scotland

after lockdown

pay

and took recourse

to the golf course

they call the links

and are now sad

that they can't pit

their new skills

against granddad

but methinks

the time will come

hopefully next year

to try out

their new gear

wait and see

and we'll meet

on the first tee.

Chronicles Redux #3

so here i am

living between extremes

but not beyond my means

a tubby pensioner in slim-fit jeans

part-time reality

part-time dreams

reality -

i'm an old fart

dreaming -

i'm young at heart

wishes and reality

staying well apart

is it schizophrenia

is it bi-polarity

is it cause for worry

or a subject for hilarity

busy with my rhyming

quite forgot my timing

i'm about to be

in trouble

something's burning

in the oven

what was that

i just said

is that sawdust

in your head

your thoughts are always

somewhere else

always thinking

when not drinking

of yourself

i can't explain it's

not dementia

alzheimers

or anorexia

or not even

impotentia

the truth is this

and it's not pretty

i'm just another

walter mitty.

Chronicles Redux #4

from first tee

to ninth green

certainly

takes my mind off

covid-nineteen

it's not just

the occasional

good drive

that keeps my mind

alert and alive

or successful

pitch, chip, or putt

but

the quiet sights

and sounds

that abound

away from

the stress and strife

of everyday life

a loping hare

without a care

family time

this year's

moorhen and nutria brood

grazing

nibbling

their free

vegetarian food

unconcerned

around and in

a water hazard

overhead circles

a buzzard

or kestrel

and rarely

a red kite

hunting for the

field mice

that make the burrows

where my golf balls

disappear

out of sight

(to be fair

i sink more

in the water

than i ought to)

but i happily

pay the price

for nature

around me

from green

to the next tee

stopping for

plants my wife

wants to identify

or pick

the occasional boon

of one or other

edible mushroom

there's also

a great variety

of butterfly

some common

not a few

a silver-studded blue

and others rare

the scarce swallowtail

seen

hunkering

in the bunker

at the sixth green

the fairways,

closely mown

are home

to mating

wagtails

erring gulls

and i never fail

to hear that

fluting song

of the golden oriole

in its riverine

habitat

and now and then

a surprising sight

egyptian geese

swimming and in flight

my score

of bird species seen

above, over and around

the golfing scene

is now sixty-four

probably even more

if i took more time

to look about

when i am out

on the course

today a new 'like'

for my list

red-backed shrike

father and son

hunting

one by one

from their lookout

on a lush

and tangled

whitethorn bush

back in the clubhouse

the manager regales

me with the tale

of discovering

a roe deer fawn

just after dawn

isn't nature comforting

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿:

we're conducting

a random

survey

into attitudes

to sport

a word

or two

from a random

man or woman

in the street …

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗲:

yes indeed -

sport

a word

from french

desporter

pleasure

enjoyment

delight

to disport

onesself

from the latin

portare

to carry away

troubles

and care

and …

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿:

that's not

quite

what i mean

i rather thought

something

about actual sport

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗲:

training for

playing or

viewing

or …

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿:

such as

football

or….

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗲:

let's start with

football then

vastly overpaid

players

of limited

intelligence

and

social skills

like many

but not all

of their fans

who like

wearing

colourful

tribal uniforms

and standing

close together

instead of

sitting comfortably

waving flags

scarves

and other

objects that

block the view

of anyone

seriously interested

in what is happening

on the pitch

and with

a remarkable talent

for singing

or chanting

consistently

and monotonously

the same mantras

off-key

and

then there are

the hooligans …

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿:

but ….

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗲:

i was just

getting started

and sport is

a very

comprehensive

term to cover …

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿:

… have you

nothing positive

to say …

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗲:

well sport

does get

people out

into the fresh air

so from a health

point of view

participating

from cradle to grave

is to be

applauded

but as spectators

standing

close together

instead of

sitting comfortably

waving flags

scarves

and other

objects that

block the view

of anyone

seriously interested

in what is happening

on the pitch

doesn't do much

for in corpore sano

let alone

mens sana

i won't get into

public queueing

and fan piles

but

add a couch

television

beer

peanuts and

other fatty foods and …

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿:

thank you sir

or madam

and now back to

the studio and

jock mcfit

in …

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗲:

excuse me

but

now i have the opportunity

iust let me

say a few

words on

important matters

such as

drugs

corruption

bribes

racism

foul play

cheating

hooliganism

politics

human trafficking

work slaves …

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿:

i'm sorry to have to

cut you off there

sir or madam

we have to

get back

to the studio

for a live

broadcast

of the fifth

indonesian

regional

badminton league …

𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗲:

…. and i want my

licence fee

refunded

and some more

variety in

my afternoon

evening

early hours

weekend

entertainment

and not reruns of

old movies

remakes

and best of

1990 crime stories

i want to know

where my money

goes

all those

exclusive right fees

to line the coffers

of functionaries

and to overpay

sportspeople

of limited

intelligence

and

social skills ….

Chronicles Redux #8

When I hear of Lukaschenko

Why do I think of Trumpaschenko?

Both men have, a fact worth noting,

problems with the public voting.

With fairness to the latter

(but that's another matter) ,

He's not (yet) a dictator -

we'll deal with that one later.

They cast their votes in Belarus

And now they're making quite a fuss.

A massive eighty plus percent

for the incumbent President!

That's really very weird,

the vote was engineered

In the good old USA

They don't do things quite that way.

But votes that don't arrive on time

are invalid - is that a crime?

The spotlight's on Louis deJoy

USPD his little toy.

He wants to privatise the mail,

in the meantime it can fail.

Mail-in voting not desired,

Postmen and women being fired.

Overtime forbidden,

postboxes are hidden,

sorting machines removed

so ballots not approved.

So back to the days of Pony Express

the postal service is now in a mess.

Will we soon have to foster

The Postman - Kevin Costner?

All this required the assent

of the current President,

I hope the folk remember,

when voting in November.

Chronicles Redux #9

so it's friday

again

school's in

children out

again

politician's

with one

deaf ear

we're struggling

with corona

the economy

what do you want

to hear

there are other

the future

young people

reply

why

we've waited

far too long

no more delay

politicians say

don't get

us wrong

there's hope

but we can

only cope

with one thing

at a time

is that

a crime

let's have

a chat

and all that

and tell us

what you want

what's there

to do

we thought

you knew

the evidence

but you don't

about what

the scientists

consumption

to drive

the economy

for our lifestyle

that we're used to

we want things

even bigger

even faster

even better

even more

but don't you see

that's an anomaly

our answer

to the assumption

that consumption

is essential

is rejection

it lacks potential

it's detrimental

the wrong direction

can't you see

the connection

our resources

are shrinking

like the ice

on the glaciers

at the poles

just look at

the ozone holes

our demand

is ever greater

we need to act

n o w

sooner than

later

the answer

is reduction

in our present

way of living

always thinking

of number one

the current waste

is unforgiving

and if

the situation

doesn't change

in a very

few years

to come

we're done

if not in this

the next

or subsequent

generation

it's called

causation

and so

every friday

once a week

we will be out

of school

on the streets

until you learn

now it's

your turn

before we

all burn

and human life

is not

worth living

have you

still no

misgivings

thanks for

listening

to us

now do

something

for us

all our love

your children

daughter and son

and grandchildren

and those

yet to come

meanwhile

we won't quit

they still

in the '50s

our parish

in

newtown

(in mid-

not far from

welshpool

with

not least

students from

france and

spain

the former

often came

to the

conlin house

for

conversation

sometimes

dinner

which later

for me

proved to be

a winner

as it meant

i was

invited back

to visit them

on the

continent

i went

to france

not for

romance

although

there's always

a chance

but i was

green

not yet

a teen

only eleven

at the time

just to

learn french

leaving home

alone

was a

wrench

but exciting

wales -

london -

paris

by train

not plane

very inviting

arriving

at the

gare du nord

treated

like a lord

chantal's dad

drove like mad

foot down hard

along the

boulevard

in an

old citreon

the doors

opened

forward

two days

to see

the eiffel tower

louvre

with

mona lisa

notre dame

arc de triomphe

champs elysee

and the

food

i didn't

want to be rude

but eating

horse

as a main

course

was new to me

not exactly

my cup of tea

though

the meat

was very

sweet

two days

gone

time to

move on

again

to nancy

by train

chemin der fer

learning already

here and there

destination

reached with ease

then on to

vezelize

the next station

not the last stop

for i had

to go on

collected

by car

to the

village of

clery sur brenon

there welcomed

by the family

henri

four weeks

of summer

and what

a summer

it was

to be

for me

memories of

red wine

watered down

baguette

cheese

and onion

skin turning

brown

drinking milk

from

the pail

treading on

a rusty nail

rabies jab

from a vet

but no

effects

or regret

snuggling

in the hay

with nicole

young girls

the other

enjoys

les haricots

they called

the village fool

why

i'll never

he had

never

the bus

stuck

on the level

crossing

with the

and

the keeper's

wife

(he was drunk

in bed)

bossing

the bus driver

dressing  him down

on the

from paris to calais

trouble

with

the train

conductor

because i had

the wrong

half of the ticket

for the other way

saved by a

who said

leave the

you silly

it was

again

a wrench

coming back

speaking

trawling

how much

of this

whether or not

its not far

it's also

a three-way

win-win

to mention

the smugglers

avoid detention

and the

who can

supplement

their pension

you can bet

there has

he's always

at last

the ideal

zoomer

the married

boomer

living the

best of both

worlds

in fact

especially if

they interact

with a

carefully-worded

marriage

contract

the secret is

a maximum

of independence

with

at best

a modicum

of domestic

attendance

and

the rest

except for

the essential

obligations

in the marital

nest

including

of course

well-prepared

libations

and conjugal

relations

but otherwise

complete

liberty

from

free to

in moderate

playing cards

measure of

accord

without

of this

reasonable

necessary

freedom

can

the essential

it is of course

fundamental

that offspring

so-called

either your own

your current

that are

detrimental

to this

way of life

do not

in any way

exacerbate

or lend

an invitation

to strife

unless

if still alive

they are

at least

over the age

of

thirty-five

when they

can be

expected

to survive

without

any contention

or involving

your personal

attention

should you

require

an additional

form of

affection

one can

recommend

on reflection

as i

have found

a cat

a hound

ensuring

before

they are

obtained

that they are

fully

house-trained

(this is also

an important

provision

for a spouse

as well,

so look

carefully

before

a decision)

this may

not be

a politically

correct

resolution

but for the

in question

it's almost

a perfect

solution

i even

say the

but it doesn’t

apply to

things that

the rest of us

are told to refrain

it's hardly

i'm not

one for

new year's

resolutions

they're not

usually

or necessarily

solutions

but mostly

i'll do

something

different

or better

this year

so we list

the things

from previous

attempts

say about ten

and then

pare them down

to four

rarely more

and finally to

three

two

one

done

and on

the first day

of the year

after your

umpteenth

beer

or preferably

wine

but that's

splitting

the hair

of the dog

and

before the cock

crows thrice

you're

in denial

especially

as this year

new year's day

falls on a

pandemically-driven

there are

left-overs

have met

half of the

wonder

once again

whether

and during

this

your subconscious

changes gear

faster than

proved that

black knights matter

have obeyed

the signals

from the brain

and you have

typed the

letter of

resignation

that has been

stuttering

sometimes grinding

around

up there

for more years

than you

want to

admit

and it's just

one click and

w h o o s h

it's

irrevocably

that was

in the letter

too

in the system and

to be absolutely

certain

that this time

your resolution

is not reneged on

you post it

on facebook

and twitter

which is what

moses would

have used

if it hadn't been

two thousand

or so

years earlier

and

a couple of handy

tablets of stone

were lying

around

so it's no

more

following the

party line

if you can

drag it down

out of its

ivory towers

where the

compromises

are made

and the ladders

have been

drawn up

so that we don't

get too close

to the fairest

in the land

and their

flattering

looking-glasses

reflecting

milk and honey

to sweeten

the folk

and sunlit

uplands

that are just

a thin crust over

a ravaged and

mistreated

planet

and the

hastily applied

plasters

are turning up

at the ends

and the pus

is oozing out

so

twenty twenty-one

raise your glasses and

drink to

throwing caution

to the

ever-warmer

winds

being honest

and not loyal

in my

voting

for facts not fiction

and hoping

that my grandchildren

what is

so different

about poets

not much

to tell

for instance

they have

a licence

to spell

words

in strange ways

like o'er

otherwise

many a

would slip

through

a poet senses

a rhyme

most

of the time

it's in

his or her

dna

and becomes

more infectious

intractious

from day

pervading

the personal

aura

and even

the surrounding

flora

and fauna

making it

difficult to think,

or say

anything

without seeking

 a fitting end

(in this case tissue)

or another

 word or phrase

 to blend

into the structure

of the subject

at hand

(and

as you suspected

at a pinch

even near rhymes

are accepted)

it leads to

antagonism

on almost

every

occasion

when those

unaware

The German comfort zone,

blanketing the nation to

little more than token empathy

for events outside its borders,

is deeper and more

all-embracing than I thought.

It seemed briefly that,

after decades of claiming

a morality it didn't own,

it was emerging from

its 75-year cocoon

of pseudo-pacifism,

and more recent

post-invasive

artificial angst

of shortages,

retaliation through escalation,

engendered by the

numbing and uncaring,

scholzing game of

But,

"man soll den Tag

In a country

that has neglected

its obligations

the sudden feeling

and the self-induced fear

of being the prime target

of Russian retribution

has lamed its leadership,

and blinded all

leaders And followers alike,

to the greater threat

to democracy

if the Ukraine

domino tumbles.

Foreign policy is

overshadowed,

if not subsumed

by domestic concerns,

weakening of the industrial base

and …..

"Temperatures in indoor swimming pools under 30° C (28° C for adults) unacceptable for children"

While:

Vainly, children's voices echo shrill

Chronicles Redux #43

The Killing Fields are Sown with Death

Alas,
the failure
of the West
to think
strategically
realistically
and through
pusillanimity
timidity
irrational fear
of escalation
by an adversary
who composes
and directs
the score
although his orchestra
have lost their rhythm
and their instruments
can't play his tune
to his satisfaction
anymore
has lent him time
to sow the killing fields
with deadly
mines
dragon's teeth
a berm
at every turn
meanwhile
at Vladimir's leisure
death also rains
from the skies
on children
hospitals
national culture
and treasure
and poisonous
threats and lies
spew from the mouths
of Sergey
and Dmitry
who I hope
and pray
will also be called
to account
one future day.

But I have
my doubts
have seen and heard
so many turnabouts
to believe
that credible
retribution
will be exacted
from the responsible
actors
as the decision-makers
of the West
also have blood
on their lily-white vest
and when the graves
are counted
tales of rape and pillage
bombardment
torture and
child abduction
are recounted
they too should
but will not
take the blame
hang their heads
in shame
for their lack
of courage
determination and
forcing the defenders
of our democracy
to fight
with one hand
tied behind
their back

Chronicles Redux #44

The Gods on Their Side

it’s no
coincidence
that the greek
god of the sea
poseidon
(i’ll choose him over
neptune for
geographical reasons)
and ukraine
share the trident
as their symbol
combined mostly
with a net
a very effective
weapon in the
gladiatorial arena
and now
in the eastern reaches
of pontum axenum
originally
pontum anti-axenum
or
to be consistent
ὁ Ἄξεινος
the inhospitable sea
which is what
it is increasingly
proving to be for
the russian
black sea fleet
that
after they felt
the bite
of the
ukrainian tines
in and around
the port
of sevastopol
on land as well
as in the water
and fled
with their
rudders between
their legs
to their
own territory
where i hope
the rest of
their army
will be
in the
not too distant
future
and they
can take
their kerch bridge
with them
if there’s
anything left of it
which i doubt
if the trend continues
although a
german taurus
missile
or two
would do the job
in no time at all
it’s one thing
having the gods
on your side
but it would
be a big help
if chancellor scholz
and his
misguided
post-pseudo
pacifist cronies
were to
come out
of hiding
and concentrate
on the problem
at hand
and give ukraine
the tools
to do the job

and hit
the russian logistics
reclaim crimea
and
win the war
which
they have proved
they are
capable of
and not on
how to cuddle up

Слава Україні - Slava Ukraini!

Chronicles Redux #45

The Seventh of October

numbed
almost to the point
of indifference
by the gruelling
and gruesome
attrition of the
war in
ukraine
the world was
again
shaken to its roots
by the
unexpected
multi-domain
barbaric
armed
hamas incursion
into israel
on 7 october
that
in its ruthless
and cruel
brutality
has sent
aftershocks
through the near
and middle east
and beyond
with no one
but those
blinded by
instinctive hatred
for all things
jewish
failing to
condemn
the more than evil
and inhuman acts
and recognising
israels right
and need
to defend itself
and respond
in a decisive
measured
but moderate
and civilised
manner
the price of democracy
being that
we have to fight
openly
firmly but fairly
and with one hand
tied behind our backs
whereby
the adversary
has all
inhuman
undemocratic
options open
as we experience
daily
in reports
from ukraine

that it is
legitimate
to root out
and destroy
the evil
that is hamas
is unquestioned
not only for
the deep wounds
and humiliation
inflicted on
the jewish nation
but also for
their treatment
of their own
palestinian people
and the perils
of devastation
death
and misery
to which
they now
expose them
it is moot
in the heat
of conflict
to point fingers
and discuss
the origins
and the
undoubted faults
on both sides
the historians
will do that
for us
although there
is no shortage
of the
usual suspects
the expert vultures
who are
already circling
bickering over
and picking at
what flesh
still remains
on the bones

israel will
react with
hard and
undoubtedly harsh
and subjectively
appropriate measures
but we have
moved on from
the biblical
principle of
an eye
for an eye
not least
because
if we have learnt
one lesson
from the
armed conflicts
from vietnam
to kosovo
and all before
after and
in between
it is the phrase
that slips
far too easily
from our lips
but which
is a five-syllable
euphemism
for the maiming
slaughter of
innocents
the elderly
the sick
women
children
disabled
and all others
that fall under
the term
non-combatants
meaning
nothing else
but
peripheral
defenceless
vulnerable
soft
non-targets
termed
obliquely
collateral damage

breaking news
a senior
isis
taliban
hamas
commander
was
targeted and
eliminated
taken out
killed
in a
precision
bomb
missile
rocket
drone
strike
last night
and we
gaze at
our tv screens
and are
mesmerised by
the crosshairs
unwaveringly focussed
on a
boat
vehicle
house
and the noiseless
expanding
mushroom
of billowing smoke
dust and debris
we are shown
no images
of the child’s bicycle
or nearby
twisted bodies
torn-off limbs
and shattered
neighbouring dwellings
after the dust settles
victims of
collateral damage
blast waves
metal splinters
flying and
falling masonry
these are not
snipers’ rifles
with one small
deadly
but
individual
projectile
no
these weapons
are designed
to maim
kill and subdue
within a
planned
lethal radius
and they complete
their macabre task
efficiently
impassionately
and thoroughly
with the aftermath
announced in
military statements
press conferences
x - formerly twitter
and batted
like a thousand
ping-pong balls
back and forth in the news
and social media
until the questions of
relevance
appropriateness
morality
and
responsibility
are entombed
in the mass grave
of truth
and between
the new
and hastily-printed
pages
of rival
would-be
historians
best sellers

as all
internecine
conflicts
the major
world players
will ultimately
bring this to an end
if only temporarily
with negotiation
and political settlement
but not before
too many innocents
have died
or are fated
to suffer
displacement
poverty and
an empty future

Deutschland-Ukraine

Die deutsche Komfortzone,
die die Nation
auf kaum mehr als
ein symbolisches Mitgefühl
für Ereignisse außerhalb ihrer Grenzen
beschränkt,
ist tiefer und umfassender,
als ich dachte.

Für kurze Zeit
schien es so,
als würde es,
nachdem es jahrzehntelang
eine Moral beansprucht hatte,
die es nicht besaß,
aus seinem 75-jährigen Kokon
des Pseudopazifismus
und der neueren
postinvasiven künstlichen Angst
vor Mangel,
Vergeltung durch Eskalation,
hervorgerufen durch das betäubendes,
gefühlloses, scholzes Spiel
von Ochs und Berg
bei der Waffenlieferung
an ein belagertes Land,
das vom Dritten Reich
überrannt
und brutal misshandelt wird.

Noch nie haben
die Vielhabenden
den Nichtbesitzenden
so widerwillig

Vergebens hallen Kinderstimmen schrill
auf leeren Schulhöfen und Kindergärten wider,
während Putins Bomben und Raketen töten.
Eine neue Demokratie,
unvollkommen,
auf der Suche nach Freiheit,
kämpft ums Überleben,
um einen Fremdkörper,
den russischen Dämon,
auszutreiben.
Wann werden wir erkennen,
dass die Ukraine UNSEREN Kampf führt?
